Innovation: fusing creative arts and tech

‘The Fuse at Ten: Reviewing a Decade of Research Impact’ report was launched at the House of Lords in May. The report details the wider impact across the UK of the Brighton Fuse and Fuse North East projects championing the combination of arts and design, humanities and tech skills and insights to power the development of digital and creative clusters and ecosystems. The evidence in the report is timely in the context of the widening focus and debates on the major impacts of AI-related innovation.

The report features discussion of the importance of place as well as interdisciplinarity and collaborative space where ‘informal listening’ can feed into innovation in a variety of ways either instantly or over time. Other key points include:

  • ‘The Fuse approach to innovation is emphatically people-centred.’

  • ‘The Fuse research-innovation model enables collaboration between business, technology, creatives, arts and research allowing SMEs, freelancers, business support agencies and Universities to collaborate.’

  • ‘The Fuse projects have driven fusion through collaboratively building on existing networks and organisations seeking to avoid duplication and to add more and different opportunities supporting fusion and innovation.’

  • ‘Fused individuals have a very strong commitment to the benefits of fusion and interdisciplinary work with recognition of the need for multiple, distinct and diverse influences to enable innovation.’
