Creative Graduate Employment

CHEAD’s Autumn Membership Networking Meeting will provide a forum for senior managers and employment services within creative HE get to grips with the practical changes in DLHE, LEO, and TEF but also with the ideas and interventions currently shaping the creative graduate employment landscape.

The UK is facing a crisis in the creative skills pipeline. There is ever-increasing pressure on creative HEIs to supply the skills needs of our vibrant creative industries as well as to demonstrate the value which their experience of creative HE adds to our graduates’ employability.

Employability data has become key both to providing potential students with the information they need to make decisions on their futures but also for managers and policymakers to shape creative HE itself. We are currently embarking on the most major reorganisation of the UK’s HE infrastructure for many decades and entering the era of linked-data. At the same time, the creative economy facing graduates is becoming increasingly competitive and precarious. What can we learn and share from how are our members tackling these issues?

We will begin the session with an overview of some of the new metrics before moving through innovative approaches from our members and partners, and then to how freelancers and graduates themselves are engaging with the issues:

• Rachel Hewitt (HESA) introducing NewDLHE (Graduate Outcomes) Survey with Kate Wicklow introducing GuildHE’s recent work on Graduate Employability and Sally Benton from the Design Council talking about the difficulties in measuring the wider Design Economy
• Richard Sant (UAL) discussing the Creative Attributes Framework, Linda Marchant (NTU) on her innovative approach to career fairs, Wendy Mason (AA2A) on the creative freelance economy and Theresa Easton, Artists Union England on how freelancers are tackling precarity
• There will be an extended period for Q&A and networking to round off the day.
