Cooper Gallery is a public gallery associated with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee. It has gained international recognition as a distinctive platform in Scotland with its radical curatorial research, international approach and focus on critical discourse in contemporary art and culture.
By positively advocating the pooling of knowledge from different disciplines Cooper Gallery’s programme implements a sustained and rigorous critical engagement. With four gallery spaces devoted to an integrated programme of new commissions, exhibitions, off-site projects, public engagement events, artists and writers’ residencies and publishing, Cooper Gallery actively develop meaningful and effective collaborations with national and international organizations/individuals. This approach enhances the reach and quality of our work, enabling us to support, produce and disseminate the best practices of established and emerging, national and international artists and creative practitioners.
Since 2010, Cooper Gallery’s unique new model of curating, grounded in discursive, participatory and process-led strategies has led to projects with internationally celebrated artists, curators and organisations. In 2015, Cooper Gallery initiated its international project CURRENT: Contemporary Art from Scotland that showcases for the first time in China on a large scale the excellence and distinctiveness of contemporary art made in Scotland in a four-phase programme consisting of eight exhibitions and working with four major art organisations across three cities in China.
