The Office for Students are currently consulting on the approach to £1.3b recurrent funding for 2021-22 for high-cost subjects, premiums to support disadvantaged students and funding for specialist institutions. Due to the specialist and detailed nature of the consultation questions, this will most likely need to be led by finance colleagues. However, CHEAD is concerned at the proposed demotion of the creative subjects to ‘non-essential’ subjects, and will be taking further action with partners to raise our concerns with this proposal.

CHEAD’s response to the proposal is that:
- The proposed funding cut will adversely impact art and design provision at HE level
- The Creative Industries contributed £116bn in GVA in 2019 and employed 2 million people across all nations and regions and the proposed funding cut will impact the pipeline to the Creative Industries, putting into jeopardy the UK’s global reputation for creative excellence
- The notice given of this funding cut is too short to enable HE institutions to plan for September
