This year’s conference will be held in partnership with Liverpool Hope University, with the theme of Peace.

There will be a break in the programme on Friday 8 November for delegates and speakers to travel to Liverpool.

Given the prevalence of contemporary inter-state and intra-state conflicts, the ongoing disruptive influence of the global pandemic, and our existential struggle to avert climate crisis, the peace agenda has become more prominent in all forms, levels and dimensions of education. In response to UNESCO’s recently published peace education strategy (UNESCO, 2024), to what extent might art and design education play an active role in the promotion of forms of peace that expose the roots of inequality and oppression, or imagining a just “new world” (Darder, 2009)? What are the implications for art and design educators offering spaces to critically examine the conditions in which peace either thrives or diminishes? What role can art and design play in actionable, socially-just peace?
This call invites responses to these questions by taking the time to consider peace in the context of art and design education from various angles and perspectives. The following themes may serve as a guide for intending speakers:
- Addressing injustice and inequality in our societies.
- Galleries as critical spaces for learning about contemporary and historical turmoil.
- Art and design education: creating spaces for dissensus in pursuing peace.
- Sustainable design learning.
- Contemporary community arts as a means of promoting inner peace.
- Relational peace in community art and craft practices.
- Politics of peace in the arts.
- Shaping peace through socially engaged art.
- Classroom projects relating to critical compassion and empathy.
- Contemporary and historical artistic representations of peace and human rights.
- Dissensus as a pedagogical tool to pursue peace.
- Artist teacher practices – peace ‘making’.
- Peace and the school curricula.
- The art classroom as sanctuary.
Please submit a 200 word abstract by 31 July 2024 and make it clear how your work links to the main conference theme.
